Sikh Heritage Month Flag Raising

Saskatchewan’s Sikh community contributes so much to our province—through service, generosity, and deep community involvement.

I was proud to join many of my Saskatchewan NDP MLA colleagues at Sikh Day flag-raising ceremonies and Vaisakhi celebrations in Saskatoon. It was an afternoon filled with joy, unity, and the vibrant energy that defines the spirit of Vaisakhi.

Vaisakhi is a time of renewal and reflection. It represents strength, resilience, and community—values that the Sikh community embodies every day. It was an honour to be part of the celebrations, sharing in the traditions and the powerful sense of belonging that this day brings.

But even in the midst of celebration, we must also confront difficult truths.

This week, members of the Sikh community were subjected to hateful comments—hurtful words spoken by an elected representative in the Saskatchewan Legislature. Many have shared the pain and harm caused by those remarks. Let me be clear: that is not OK.

Hate has no place in Saskatchewan. Not now, not ever.

It must be called out for what it is, and those responsible must be held accountable. Silence is not an option when members of our community are being targeted.

Saskatchewan New Democrats stand in solidarity with the Sikh community—not just in moments of celebration, but in moments of hardship, too. We are committed to building a province where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. A Saskatchewan where we celebrate our differences, learn from one another, and grow stronger because of our diversity.

Happy Vaisakhi.
